    INDOOROOPILLY, February 6: Nick Xynias might desire no greater repayment than improving people's lives but recently he was forced to accept a little more, in the form of praise.Mr Xynias took out the new Senior Citizen of the Year Australia Day Award from City Hall for 30 years of work with ethnic communities and the ageing.An Egyptian engineer who arrived in Australia in his early 20s, Mr Xynias, 75, established the first aged care home to offer high-quality nursing care for financially disadvantaged people from varying cultural backgrounds Indooroopilly's Berlasco Court Caring Centre.He also co-founded the Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland, now the Federation of Ethnic Communities Councils of Australia.Presenting the award, Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said Mr Xynias had used his concern for the disadvantaged and needy to become an outspoken and highly effective advocate for their issues.

    Nick Xynias

    Born in Ismailia, Egypt, Nick came to Queensland in 1956 after graduating with a Diploma in Engineering from the College of Engineering in Cairo.From 1957 to 1977 Nick became an active member of a number of organisations, amongst them the Association of Greeks from Egypt of which he is currently Secretary/Treasurer and the Order of Australian Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, of which he is former Supreme National President.In 1977 Nick founded the Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland.The Council was incorporated as a Company Limited by Guarantee on 26 June 1980.The mission of the Council is to work at enriching the Queensland and Australian community through the participation and involvement of people from diverse cultural backgrounds.Nick is immidiate past Chairman of the ECCQ, a position which he has held for varying periods over the past 21 years.
