Tong Xu, assistant professor in the department of physics, was recently granted funding by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR).

The CIHR funding will be spent on parts needed to build a one-of-a-kind research system that will track the whereabouts of a tumour in the human body while a patient is undergoing radiation, Xu said. The NSERC funding will allow him to better outfit the medical physics research lab with new X-Ray machines as well as other lab equipment.

When it comes to the recognition Carleton receives for its research, Xu said "the Carleton physics department is quite well known among the country or even internationally."

Tong Xu, assistant professor, department of physics Tel: 613-520-2600, ext. 8794 External beam radiation therapy is one of the main treatments for cancerous tumours. However, the treatment becomes difficult if the tumour inside the body does not stay still, i.e. lung tumours. In such cases, there is high risk of damaging the surrounding normal tissue instead of killing the tumour. Xu is developing a tracking tool with the potential to provide direct measurement of the tumour location in real-time to prevent damaging healthy tissue during radiation therapy.
