Dr. Xina Xie is an Advisory Scientist at Idaho National Laboratory where she is currently engaged in research involving enhanced oil recovery by microbial surfactants, basalt rock characterization and the effect of microorganisms on the wettability and fluid flow of basalt formations, and evaluation of carbon sequestration in geological formations and its risk assessment. She is also Principal Investigator on the DOE grant project titled "Chemical Stimulation of oil wells producing from carbonate reservoirs."Her areas of expertise include reservoir characterization, including the physical and chemical properties of rocks and fluids; reservoir brine chemistry and its effect on oil recovery; enhanced oil recovery by surfactants; capillary pressure and relative permeabilities; CO2 enhanced oil recovery and carbon sequestration; and carbon sequestration in geological formations and risk assessment.

Dr. Xie's previous experience includes seven years with China National Petroleum Corporation as a research engineer and five years in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Wyoming as a research scientist and lab manager. Her work includes alkaline waterflooding, underground water contamination, the effect of brine properties on reservoir core wettability and oil recovery, the effect of diluted brine and connate water saturation on oil recovery, and the capillary and surface properties of model porous media. She also performed a wettability study of very tight sandstones at high temperature.

Dr. Xie received a Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Wyoming in 1996, an M.S. in Porous Media Fluid Mechanics at The Academy of Sciences of China, Lanzhou, in 1985; and a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering at Southwestern Petroleum Institute, Sichuan, China, in 1982.She has written and co-written 28 publications and project reports, including 19 articles in peer review journals (she is the lead author for seven of them). In addition, she has two peer reviewed papers in press.
