Dr Robert Xiao is a Senior Lecturer in Civil and Computation Engineering Centre at the School of Engineering, the University of Wales Swansea.
He received his undergraduate and postgraduate education in Chongqing, China and obtained his PhD from the University of Nottingham in 1994 while he was working as a research assistant on DOE and EC Eureka Cim-steel research projects.
Dr Xiao has over 20 years' experience of research, design and teaching in the field of civil engineering.
He previously researched and lectured in the China Academy of Building Research, and the Universities of Birmingham, Nottingham and Southampton in the UK.
He hasalso worked as a structural engineer at Gifford & Partners, Consulting Engineers, where he was involved in designing of a number of composite steel and concrete structures.
He was the recipient of Royal Research Fellowship from the Royal Society and Industry Fellowship from the Royal Academy of Engineering.
His research interests include computational modelling with finite element analysis on structures and structural materials; steel and composite steel structures; fibrous concrete material and structures.
He has given open lectures for ICE, I.Struct.E local branches and the Concrete Society on analysis and design of composite steel structures and fibrous concrete material and structures.
He has already successfully supervised to completion 21 research degree students (7PhDs, 1 MPhil and 13 MRes) and two postdoctoral research fellows.
He is currently leading a strong research team (1 post-doctoral senior research assistant, 4 PhDs, 1 MPhil, 1 MSc and one academic visitor) with a range of research projects being conducted on structural analysis and computation simulation.
Dr Xiao has a collaborated research project on pyseudo-dynamic performance of composite steel connections in State Key Laboratory based at Tongji University in Shanghai, China.
