Key Personnel: Yvonne Y. Wu, Ph.D.

    Director, Cell Biology

Dr. Yvonne Wu received her B.S. degree from the College of Medicine, National Taiwan University in Taipei. Her major was public health and she received the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award from the National Taiwan University upon her graduation. She came to the United States to begin her doctoral studies and received a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in the area of toxicology and public health. While at Berkeley she was awarded a fellowship from the U.S. Public Health Service and published a number of papers that significantly contributed to our understanding of how the brain regulates blood pressure.

Dr. Wu then went on to perform postdoctoral studies at the University of California, San Francisco and later, at the National Institutes of Heath, Bethesda, MD. At both of these institutions she performed basic research aimed at understanding: 1) cell growth and differentiation, and 2) the process of signal transduction. At UC, San Francisco she was awarded an NIH National Research Service Award to carry out these studies. Her post-doctoral research led to seven publications in high quality, peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Wu was then recruited to work as a staff scientist at the University of California, Irvine in the laboratory of Dr. Ralph Bradshaw, chairman of the Department of Biochemistry.
    ...
For the last 10 years Dr. Wu has contributed extensively to our knowledge of how growth factors, including FGF, signal cells to grow and differentiate. Her studies culminated in the discovery of a novel mechanism whereby cytokines and growth factors induce cells to differentiate into nerve cells.Dr. Wu reported this work in three publications, on which she was the first author, in the prestigious Journal of Biological Chemistry.

Dr. Wu joined Cardio as a Senior Scientist and has the critical job of ensuring that all of Phage's products are of high potency and contain the requisite biological activity. She is also involved in the development of better and more cost-effective bioassays for our products that will improve the competitive advantage of Phage's products in the market place.
