In a letter to the Claycomo plant's 4,200 union members, Wright said he realizes the latest concessionary agreement is "a bitter pill to swallow" after the series of givebacks the work force has approved in recent years.

"For us, the key thing this set of negotiations does for Kansas City is give us hope for the future," Wright said in a message posted on Local 249's Web site. "It's true we're giving up some things, but in return we're getting a commitment from Ford for new products."

In the 2007 contract, Ford also pledged to invest in a new body shop on the Escape line at Claycomo.

"This (latest agreement) is just another step in the right direction to get a new product after the Escape," Wright said.
