REBECCA Wood does not have to sacrifice her ambition of becoming a nurse by staying in Geraldton.

Rebecca (16) attended the Geraldton University Centre open day on Tuesday to find out more information on her chosen career path.

Rather than leave family and friends and move to the city Ms Wood, who is a Year 12 student at Geraldton Secondary College, is choosing to take advantage of Geraldton's first university.

"I just think I am too young to move away from home and leave everything I know," she said.

"Now I don't have to go to Perth and I am looking forward to studying in Geraldton."

Rebecca said she could still move to Perth after a few years to specialise but for now she was content with staying home.
