Mark Wood, M.D., an otologic and neuro-otologic surgeon, joined the staff of the Hough Ear Institute and its affiliate, Otologic Medical Clinic, in 1995.
Dr. Wood was raised in Africa on the mission field in Zambia. He came to the United States at the age of 16 to continue his education and graduated cum laude in 1982 from Oklahoma Baptist University with a bachelor of science degree in biology.
He received his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. After completing a five-year residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery with an outstanding record, Dr. Wood was recommended to the Hough Ear Institute for an additional year of fellowship training in otology and neurotology. Dr. Wood was invited to join the permanent staff at the Otologic Medical Clinic and the Hough Ear Institute after his fellowship.
His practice is devoted to otology and neurotology, with a special interest in hearing-related health issues including implantable hearing devices, such as cochlear implants, bone-anchored hearing devices and the SOUNDTEC implant. He also deals with more traditional otologic issues, such as chronic mastoiditis, cholesteatoma and otosclerosis, as well as childhood ear disease.
Dr. Wood's research interests have focused primarily on the area of middle ear mechanics and semi-implantable hearing devices. He has contributed to the development of both the SOUNDTEC and the Symphonix implant systems.
Dr. Wood is an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center where he completed his residency training in 1994. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology and has presented papers at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS).
He has served on the Board of Governors of the AAO-HNS and has served two terms as a board member of the Oklahoma Board of Examiners for Speech Pathology and Audiology. He has also served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Oklahoma Academy of Otolaryngology and is a member of the American Medical Association and the Oklahoma State Medical Association. -
