Wood served as the chief of public and international affairs for the Coast Guard and as the maritime policy adviser to Secretary of Transportation Brock Adams during the Carter administration.

Wood served as the commander of the First Coast Guard District in Boston.
In "retirement," Adm.Wood was very active in many volunteer organizations, including the National Board of Directors of TROA, now MOAA, the New Hampshire Port Authority and Board of Directors of the Daniel Webster Council of the Boy Scouts.He was proud to be an instructor for the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Among his awards were the Legion of Merit with one gold star, Meritorious Service Medal with one gold star, the Coast Guard Commendation Medal, and the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America.
