Joye Wood, president of the Warren County Fair and the Virginia Association of Fairs, said the competition was re-judged Tuesday and that the issue has been resolved.

Canned foods are judged based on appearance, texture, and their container, and no artificial coloring is allowed, according to the Warren County Fair Web site at www.warrencountyfair.com.The first prize in the competition is $2.50.

Wood said the rule for the Warren County Fair, and for many other fairs, is that produce must be canned in the 12 months prior to the competition, not in the calendar year.

Depending on the date of the fair, some vegetables and fruits do not start ripening until after the fair has been held, she said.

Wood said that according to standard practice, fair judges — including those in Warren County — are certified to oversee fair competitions, and they come from outside the county in which the fair is held.

"There is just a lot of work in the background for these departments, and they're volunteers and some people make mistakes, and it just kind of snowballs," Wood said of Monday's controversy.

"Each car that comes through the gate will get a free ticket ... as long as there is a paying adult in the car," said Joye Wood, president of the Warren County Fair Association.
    ...
"We are taking exhibits [today] and Sunday from 11 to 3," Wood said."Judging will be done on Monday.
    ...
The 4-H also will hold more exhibits during the evening instead of in the daytime, Wood said.

Warren County Fair Association president Joye Wood said Monday night at the fair will be extra special, this year, with a couple of unique events.

The first of these will be a groundbreaking for the new Warren County 4-H livestock barn at 6:30 p.m.

Wood said the 50th anniversary celebration would be at 7 p.m., following the Junior and Miss Warren County Fair Pageant.

A special "Queen's Tent" with food and gifts for the 20 or so former Miss Warren County Fair winners expected to attend will be set up near the stage.

"I do know we have the 1959 queen attending," Wood said.
    ...
Wood said a lot of former pageant winners are still local, but they've had calls from as far away as Florida.

"Turns out the one from Florida can't come because she works for NASA, and they have a shuttle launch coming up," Wood said."It's nice to know the girls have gone on to success."

Wood said the former fair will be introduced on stage."Hopefully they'll have their crowns," Wood said."A lot of them have been excited to come back."

If it's dark enough, Wood said they might be able to put on a PowerPoint show with photos from previous pageants."It was good to hear from them. We're going to keep a database of all the queens we've heard from. Some of them can't remember what year they won," Wood said."We just got calls from the 1974 and 1975 winners. "

Wood said special 50th anniversary pins will be on sale for $3 and a paperback history of the Warren County Fair will be available for $10 (See page B1).

Eshelman said he wants to make sure everyone knows that the traditional "family matinee" at the fair has been moved to Tuesday evening.
    ...
The winner of the Warren County contest will get $25 and a gift bag from the Virginia Egg Council, sponsor of the event, according to Wood.

"We've had some phone calls on it already this year," Wood said.

"We are on the threshold of adding to our property's service to the community and to our youth," Warren County Fair Association past-president Joye Wood told the planners on Feb. 9.
    ...
"I wish we had a boatload of money to do that," Wood said of guaranteeing a timeframe on moving the entrance.

"If you put conditions in, we'll meet them," Wood added of making the necessary entrance changes prior to the future addition of a main activities building that fair representatives agree would add to traffic congestion when in use.

"We need volunteers to help direct parking each night of the fair," said Joye Wood, president of the Fair Association.
    ...
"They are stretched thin, and I can understand how hard it can be for a volunteer fire department to handle this responsibility," Wood said."They are on call at all times, and if an emergency happens they would be called out."

Wood said all non-profit groups are invited to organize volunteers - civic clubs, church groups, Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, for example - but volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.

She said she would like to have volunteers signed up by July 1, to allow time to train them before the 2005 Warren County Fair begins on Sunday, July 31.

"We will have a manager on hand to help them if any problems arise," Wood assured, "and the Sheriff's Office will have deputies on duty throughout the fairgrounds."

Gates open at 4 p.m. each night, and volunteers need to be at the fairgrounds at least 30 minutes before that. They should be available each night, beginning Sunday, July 31 through Saturday, Aug. 6.To find out more about parking volunteers, call Wood at the Fairgrounds office, 635-5827.

Wood said the entrance booth to the fair will be moved further down the driveway, closer to the far end of the exhibit hut, so that traffic coming into the fair won't be backed up at the light at the U.S. 340/522 intersection with Fairground Road as much as it has been in the past.

Also this year, fair beauty pageants will be streamlined to include fewer contests, and a new contest for cooking enthusiasts will be held.

The Hershey's Co. is sponsoring a nationwide cooking contest for recipes that use Hershey's chocolate as one of the ingredients.Local winners will have an opportunity to compete at the Virginia State Fair.

The demolition derby, which was held for the first time last year, proved so popular that two derbies will be held this year, Wood said. One will be sponsored by G&M Auto Sales and the other will be sponsored by Via Satellite.
