The school's Gold Team performed three short plays based on folk tales Friday, productions that were designed in just 10 days with the help of director Derron Wood.

He was brought into the school as part of the Higher Order Thinking program, a grant that facilitates integrating the arts and academics.Wood is the artistic director at Flock Theater in New London.

The plays performed were based on the Greek myth of Pandora's box, the Intuit tale of Otoonah, and the African-American story of Little Eight John.The students took the plays and translated each into a script as part of their language arts class.

They also fashioned masks and sets out of recycled materials.Intricate mosaics of Greek gods were made out of old refrigerator boxes and masks were made from papier-mache."Everything you see here is recycled," Wood said.

This year's director of Twelfth Night, Derron Wood, is the Artistic Director of New London's Flock Theatre, where he has been directing and producing for the past decade.Well-known around New England, Mr. Wood's work has also been seen at the Lincoln Center out-of-doors festival and off- Broadway.Since 1995 Derron has been on the faculty of the Drama Studio in Springfield, MA, a conservatory-based theatre school for young actors age ten to twenty-one.

This time their theme carried an anti-drug message for children - but with "a strong frenetic energy, "a sense of loudness, craziness, cymbals and crashes", according to Flock's Artistic Director, Derron Wood.Its appeal to children was immediate, and led to extensive work with students in schools, libraries, and special programs including one at the Niantic Correctional State Prison for young people in Niantic, Connecticut.Derron Wood became a Master Teaching Artist in the State of Connecticut as part of the Connecticut Commission on the Arts program in 1998.

DERRON WOOD is a graduate of Connecticut College, he has also trained with the Eugene O'Neill Memorial Theater Center and attended the Leningrad State Institute of Music, Theatre and Cinematography in Leningrad as part of the National Theater Institute's Russian program.From 1986 to 1989 he studied Shakespeare under Morris Carnovsky at Connecticut College and the National Theater Institute.

During the past twenty years he has directed numerous productions in and around New England, including shows at the Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival and Off-Broadway.An early production, Home Street Home, at the Boston Center for the Arts' Cyclorama Theatre focused Derron's attention on the unique ability of puppet theatre to document experience and communicate to the audience.As he said at the time, "We use puppets and merge personalities into another world to create different conflicts and characters."

As he continued to work with actors and puppets in various theatrical vehicles he became more and more committed to the use of all types of puppets as a means of communicating with the audience.

Derron has developed numerous educational-based residencies for schools and museums throughout Connecticut.Since 1995 he has been on the faculty of the Drama Studio in Springfield, Mass, a conservatory-based theatre for young actors age ten to twenty-one.He teaches a wide variety of classes at the studio where he is an Associate Artist.He is also a recipient of Connecticut's Master Teaching Status, awarded by the Connecticut Commission on the Arts.

Derron M. Wood joined the Drama Studio faculty with his directing debut at our 1995 Festival with The Men's Cottage.He has taught and directed projects in Connecticut at Connecticut College, the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center, the National Theatre Institute, and the Mystic Seaport Museum.Other projects took place at the Bread and Puppet Theatre (Vermont) and the Dance Place in Washington, DC.Directing highlights at the Studio have included Animal Farm, The Trojan Women, A Bird of Prey, The Miser, The Wrestling Season, Time on Fire, The Automata Pieta, and last season's The King of Ireland's Son and As You Life It.He serves as Artistic Associate at the Studio.
