After 20 years as president of the Campbell River Youth Soccer Association, Dave Wood is stepping aside.

After 20 years as president of the Campbell River Youth Soccer Association, David Wood has passed the torch.
"What has happened is that our administrator, Graham Sibley, is leaving in September, and I'm retiring in September from the post office, so I offered to take over that position," Wood said."At our AGM it was agreed upon by our membership that I couldn't hold both positions. So we had an election and Colin Nemeth was voted in as president and I will take over the administrator's duties."
According to his peers, Wood's tenure at the top of the CRYSA executive tree lasted as long as it has, quite simply because he has been irreplaceable.
"David has been the driving force behind Campbell River youth soccer for a long time," said Sibley."He's done every job there is to do and the hours he has put in are astonishing. There are never enough volunteers and there's never been one like David."
...
David was always there to do whatever was needed of him.Usually with volunteers people only have so much time to commit to the cause, but David's time was endless.
"I know that when I first started, before we had an administrator, I was putting in about 20 hours a week and I just couldn't afford to give that much of my time, so we eventually hired an administrator.David was putting in way more hours than that back then, and still does to this day."
Among the highlights of Wood's tenure was the 2003 Provincial Challenge Cup tournament, when 42 boys' teams from U-12 to U-18 age groups converged in Campbell River for their respective age group championships. It is a tournament of such monumental and time-consuming proportions that BC Soccer has since split up the event into two separate tournaments.
"That was one of the biggest highlights in our association's existence, and we held the Mini World Cup that same year," Wood recalled."Probably the biggest compliment we as an association have received since that year is the amount of clubs that call us every year for advice, asking what it was that made our tournament so successful and wanting to know what they can do to make theirs better."
Another aspect of CRYSA in which Wood takes a lot of pride is the success of the rep clubs, and the number of provincial qualifying teams that the association has produced throughout the years.
"Just look at this year as an example," he said.
...
So after two decades as the top dog, Wood is handing in his key.
Or at least changing desks.
And finally, after more than 20 years with CRYSA, Wood will be getting paid for his work.
...
"But when the position came up (at the AGM, June 18) David said he'd fill those shoes. He wants to continue with heavy involvement in youth soccer and we're very happy about that."
In speaking with Wood, it becomes clear that he'd have it no other way.
"I really believe that as long as I'm alive and healthy and able, I will always want to be involved with the sport in this community," he said.
