David Wood, a geologist with the Department of Public Works, said routine monitoring of the site late last year had detected levels of mercury at or slightly above the federal government's drinking water standard of 2 micrograms per liter.

The findings present no immediate threat to public health, Wood said, and were significant only for the fact that the discovery marked "the first time that mercury has been detected at the drinking water standard" in groundwater below the landfill.

Affected homes in the area were hooked to city water in the early 1990s. The Northwest Landfill, north of Gainesville off 235A, opened in 1972 and closed in 1982.

Wood said the county is considering ways to monitor the contamination, but will likely include the installation of additional wells at the site. Leaching of mercury from unlined landfills can potentially be traced to old batteries, thermostats and fluorescent lights, Wood said.
