Travis Wong, a Grade 12 student at Burnaby South Secondary, has been recognized for his volunteer activities in and outside of school with a BC Community Achievement Award.

Travis Wong learned about volunteering at a very young age.So now, at 18, he's been recognized provincially as one of the most dedicated.Wong, a Grade 12 student at Burnaby South, received one of 39 B.C. Community Achievement Awards Tuesday in Victoria.

"It was pretty special receiving it," said Wong, who received the honour from Premier Gordon Campbell and Iona Campagnolo, Lieutenant Governor of B.C. "I felt really honoured to be around those people."

Wong was the youngest of the recipients but has already earned a reputation in the community for his volunteerism.He helps coach swimming with the Burnaby Barracudas Summer Swim Club and last fall coached his high school team at the provincial championships.He will also play and coach South at the provincial championships next month.He has been a longtime lifeguard for the Burnaby Parks and Recreation, Camp Phoenix, as well as a volunteer tour guide at Science World and the Vancouver Aquarium.He helps out at St. Michael's senior care home and is an active member of the B.C. Youth Parliament."I really enjoy volunteering because I make a lot of friends.And I like to give back to the community because, back when I was little, I got so much from community volunteers.There was a lot of parents that helped me out in all the things I've done," said Wong."I've always had a lot of volunteer support.So I really want to help out, give back what I can." Wong, who lists a number of Burnaby volunteers as his mentors, learned early how valuable people are that help out in the community.He came across volunteers on a regular basis as a youngster because his parents were always signing him up for sports and other activities.Wong, who describes himself as a people person, recognized the commitment those volunteers were making.Not content to stay on the sidelines, he began helping out where he could.
