Congratulations to Los Angeles Alpine and their coach Tony Wong on winning their 4th consecutive NACIBT.

Alpine coach Tony Wong got his troops going with a motivational halftime speech, and that was all it took for his boys to play with a little more pride as Alpine came back with their patented ball pressure and advanced 48-40 to the Semis.

With Tony Wong dishing the ball, and the NY big men feasting on the boards and in the post, one might think that it was 1996 all over again as the Rockits won the game.However in the Finals, father time seemed to have finally caught up with the Rockits, as their bodies began to betray them with cramps and fatigue.The SF Freemasons looked to MVP Chris Hong (15 points) for their offense, as he demonstrated what young legs do for a player.

Long before we officially adopted the name ALPINE STRIDERS about 16-18 years ago, our coach, Tony Wong, and his school buddies had loosely formed a basketball team to participate in local recreational leagues.Several different team names were used.

We also had other players with talent, but we didn't play that well as a team since our coach Tony was only in his infant stage as a coach.It was probably at that time when Tony learned that individual talent alone cannot win games.

My son Chris Chi and I have known Tony for only about two years which is a very short time compared to the twenty-five plus years since Tony founded the Alpine Striders.

I have heard about the Alpine Striders and Tony Wong for many years but they remained somewhat of a mystery.Even during the last couple of years, I have only learned about their very recent successes with the last group of Alpine Striders who are graduating High School Seniors this year (2006).After reading the article, I thought I should share it with our WOOBALL and Alpine Strider friends and families.I then sought permission from Coach Tony to have it published on this website.Below was his reply and the write-up 'Something about the Alpine Striders':

- Our coach, TONY WONG, is the only Asian American who has been honored by the U.S. Congress, the California State Assembly, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the Los Angeles City Council, the Los Angeles Times, and the Los Angeles Dodgers for his coaching prowess and his work with youths in the Asian American community.

- Our teams have participated in tournaments and games in numerous North American cities (San Francisco, Sacramento, San Jose, Las Vegas, New York, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Toronto, Montreal, etc.) and in cities in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
