Wong said the top priority for patients in rehab is to maximize what he or she can do with efficient limbs, and how to compensate for the rest.

Dr. Edison Wong, the medical director of the rehabilitation unit at HealthAlliance Hospital/Burbank said HealthAlliance has been studying the process of how stroke patients are treated for the past six months.

"We looked at how patients are treated for stroke when they come in, what's being done and whether we meet the standards," Wong said."So far, it will probably be possible to do that, but we still have a ways to go. ... It's not just the ER, but getting to a stroke floor and having a multi-disciplinary team of doctors."

Wong said doctors at HealthAlliance have given a few patients tPA, and those patients were then transported to a Boston hospital for evaluation.

Wong added the hospital has a neurologist who is always reachable by phone, and stroke patients often go to HealthAlliance for rehabilitation.

"We do have some of (the) pieces in place," Wong said.
