CAMDEN - An environmental cleanup of the former Laribee Machine Co. property at 2 Main St. in the village could eventually lead to a new business moving onto the site, Camden Mayor Michael Wolzmuth said Sunday night.
The current goal is to clean what has become a stain on the village's appearance, Wolzmuth said. After that, village officials will have to look into how the site can best be used for the community, he said.
It's likely a new business would be welcomed, he said.
...
The site doesn't present any immediate health threats to residents, and air testing will be conducted during demolition efforts to ensure no health risks are produced during the process, Wolzmuth said.
Funding provided through the state Clean Water/Clean Air Bond Act passed in 1996 is available to repay the village for up to 90 percent of the eligible costs for the investigation and remedial efforts.
"Ninety percent refunded - it's hard to pass that up," Wolzmuth said.
It's unclear how much the village's 10 percent of the payments will cost because the extent of the cleanup has yet to be determined, he said.
