    Over the course of the next year, Petco Animal Supplies Inc. (San Diego) will establish nine regional grooming training centers across the country and hire and train 600 new groomers, said Stu Wolman, director of pet services.Centers are located in Lansing, Ill.; Escondido, Vacaville and Glendale, Calif.; Oakdale, Minn.; Warminster, Pa.; Massapequa, N.Y.; Waltham, Mass.; and Mesa, Ariz. Petco also plans to open training centers in Houston, Dallas and Seattle.

    PetFoodDirect.com (Montgomeryville, Pa.) recently joined forces with QVC.com in March to form Pets-Center@QVC.com, a co-branded Internet store available.The site carries more than 40 premium pet food brands as well as a full line of veterinarian-recommended products.

    Pfizer Inc. (New York) is considering selling its Tetra aquarium and pond supplies division, because it does not fit the company's focus on prescription drugs.

    The company-sponsored training course includes pay and hands-on work.For the first four weeks of training, which takes place at the Center, students are paid a straight hourly wage.After that, they move into stores for hands-on training, where they can earn commission on the pets they groom in the store.As they move up through the training, and graduate to the store, that commission increases.
