Nancy WolfNancy Wolf , programs director for Meadow Mill Athletic Club , says employees are seeing an increase in members using the club as amateur athletes shun the outdoors in favor of a controlled climate during the heat wave.
From malls to health clubs to ice manufacturers , a number of businesses are seeing rising sales and traffic as people are flooding through their establishments' doors to find ways to beat the heat.
Obviously the conditions outside are not conducive to doing much of anything , said Nancy Wolf , programs director for the Meadow Mill Athletic Club in Hampden.Short of cutting your grass , I don't know what other activities you would want to do outside..
Since the heat wave began Monday , employees at Meadow Mill have seen rising numbers of current and new members pour into the club to take advantage of exercising in a controlled climate , as opposed to working out in temperatures nearing 100 degrees.
If you have asthma or any kind of health condition , you certainly don't want to be out there , Wolf said.We're hearing it's too hot to even go to the pool.And it's not just hot , it's hazardous..
According to Wolf , employees at the club field about five phone calls a week from prospective members during a normal moderate summer.Over the course of Monday and Tuesday , 25 prospective members telephoned , with half of them joining the gym.
In the summer , we gear ourselves for a slowdown , she said.This is exciting.We're almost looking for stuff to do , then … all of a sudden you've got members coming in and you have to give tours and promote the club..
Local malls also have been experiencing increases in traffic of people who want to get out and have fun , but not pass out from heat exhaustion.
