In her immigration practice, Nancy works with employers to obtain legal status and work authorizations for temporary workers, permanent residents, and family members of alien workers.Her work includes labor certifications, H-1B visas, TN visas, and trainee visas, permanent residency applications (based on employment or on family status), and a variety of other work-related immigration issues.She has experience with obtaining visas for health care clients and high tech clients.She also works to obtain legal status for spouses and children of foreign nationals legally admitted to the U.S.She enjoys a close association with both employers and foreign nationals in choosing and implementing an appropriate and effective immigration strategy.Nancy also advises employers on I-9 compliance issues.
In her employment counseling practice, she advises employers on such issues as Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) compliance, reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), sexual harassment investigations, and effective employee terminations.In fact, she is recognized statewide for her knowledge and practical interpretation of the ADA and the FMLA.She has been selected by the Minnesota State Bar Association, Employment Law Section to edit the 'Leave of Absence' tab of its new employment law website.
On the litigation side of her practice, Nancy represents employers in federal and state court, and before the EEOC and the Minnesota Department of Human Rights.

Nancy has done training for Fortune 500 companies, the EEOC, the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, the U.S. Department of Labor, and the American Bar Association.Since 1996, she chaired an annual, day-long seminar for Minnesota State Bar Continuing Legal Education pertaining to ADA/FMLA and leave of absence issues.
Nancy is active in pro bono and community activities.Nancy was the Chair of Briggs' Pro Bono Committee from 1995-1999.She served for five years on the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights, and has also served on the Minnesota State Bar Association Committee on Legal Assistance to the Disadvantaged.She is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Immigrant Law Center.She is on the Board of Trustees of the Woodbury United Methodist Church.In addition to her involvement in community and pro bono policy-making, Nancy has been a dedicated provider of direct pro bono services to low-income families and individuals on immigration-related matters, most often in political asylum cases.In fact, Nancy spear-headed formation of a team of Briggs lawyers to handle political asylum cases for aliens with a well-founded fear of torture, imprisonment, or death if deported to their home countries.In 2000, Nancy accepted an annual Volunteer Award from Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights on behalf of the entire Briggs Asylum Team.
Nancy is a member of the Hennepin County, Ramsey County, Minnesota State, and American Bar Associations, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association.She speaks fluent French and enjoys international travel.
Nancy received a B.A. summa cum laude and a B.S. with highest honors from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis campus, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.She also earned a Master's Degree from the University of Minnesota.Nancy received her law degree from the William Mitchell College of Law, where she was an Executive Editor for the William Mitchell Law Review.Nancy was also a finalist in William Mitchell's Burton Brief legal writing competition.She joined Briggs in 1987.
