Murray was born in Calgary, Alberta on December 11, 1958.He obtained his Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia in 1981.

In 1982, Murray completed a British Columbia Legislative Internship and went on to obtain his law degree from the University of Toronto in 1985.He was called to the bar in 1986.

Murray is an associate with Macaulay McColl.His areas of concentration are Environmental Litigation, Insurance Claims, Personal Injury, Commercial Litigation, and Native Land Claims.
