Escalator malfunctions are rare, said Daniel Winslow, president of Syracuse-based CNY Elevator Inspections Inc."The escalator probably slipped through its brakes and oversped until the overspeed device stopped it," he said."Of course, that is what would cause the escalator to come to a jolting halt."He said escalators have a fail-safe device that acts like an emergency brake.According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 6,000 injuries associated with escalators are treated in emergency rooms per year.
