Most patients love what we do because it's painless , Interventional Radiologist Dr. Adam Winick said.Insurance companies love us , too , because the procedures are cheaper , faster and easier..

Dr. Winick recently left Johns Hopkins in Baltimore to join the Fauquier staff.

Throughout the IR suite , patients see cameras and pumps , wires and tubes - equipment that may look as if it came from Fantastic Voyage.

It provides essential services for all of the hospital , said Dr. Winick.

One service , angioplasty , involves threading a tiny tube into a blocked coronary artery.Sometimes , the doctor expands the artery to clear a blockage. In other cases , a stent gets inserted to spread the artery wall.

The suite's floor-mounted Siemens Multistar C-arm camera feeds two monitors. The equipment allows doctors to see , diagnose and treat problems the same day.

Dr. Winick calls interventional therapy - along with gene therapy - the future of medicine.

The cures for diabetes and cancer aren't that far away , he added.
