"We don't keep track of which brand is preferred, and we don't endorse any particular one," said Celina Winchester, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood of New Jersey.

Many patients are limited to the brands covered by their health-insurance carrier.This is a dilemma Planned Parenthood is attempting to address through "contraceptive equity" legislation stalled in the state legislature.

However, Winchester added, many younger patients specifically request Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceuticals' Tri-Cyclen oral contraceptive because it's also an approved acne medication.
