Nick WilsonNick Wilson has good memories of schooldays at a rural co-ed comprehensive in North Yorkshire.Geography was a favourite subject, taught by a small Irish lady with a certain style who pushed her pupils quite hard.Nick subsequently went on to read Geography and Anthropology at Durham University.
With a passion for travel, Nick joined VSO in Nigeria where he taught for two years at a school with 400 pupils. With just 6 staff members initially, this was a daunting prospect and a steep learning curve, which brought considerable responsibility. On returning to the UK, Nick joined St Olave's School in York to teach Geography and went on to become a House Master.
Now, as Head of Wells Cathedral Junior School, Nick works in close partnership with his wife Jane who provides vital support and empathy throughout the staff, parent and pupil community.Together they bring a warm and traditional style of leadership that unites the school's many facets.
"Wells is a friendly school with old-fashioned values of decency and consideration for others. We have reward systems for good manners and always try to push the positive", explains Nick; these include the weekly Good Egg Award for pupils who have been particularly considerate towards others.
Drama and Music at Wells are outstanding; Sport too is strong and Nick is keen to retain such successful diversity.Considerable thought has gone into devising timetables where Sport does not clash with Music or Drama. In effect, the children can enjoy what is on offer without having to prioritise or being channelled into one area.
"I had the dilemma at school of having to choose between sports and choir which always clashed.I enjoyed both but had to make a choice; my philosophy since then has been that everyone should be able to do everything to as high a standard as possible and at Wells we make sure that is the case", says Nick.
With a strong dislike for being deskbound, Nick's style of leadership is very much one of being out and about amongst the school community, chatting to pupils and finding out what each is up to.Nick's vision of the school is one where pupils are happy and keen to get involved in as much as possible; where successes are applauded by all and everyone is supportive. He relishes the challenge presented by a complex school that includes choristers and specialist musicians amongst the general pupils and ensuring that the various strands all pull together in one direction.
