Nicholas Wilson

Nicholas Wilson,Board Member. Nick is currently a graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz School of Public Policy and Management located in Pittsburgh, PA. His current educational goals are to apply effective communication, financial analysis, and quantitative skills in dynamic and innovative ways to promote economic development and health care access in developing nations. He graduated from St. Vincent College in Latrobe PA in May 2004 with a BS in Mathematics and Economics and a Communications minor. He received the distinctive St. Vincent College President's Award, which is given to a single graduating senior. Nick was a summer intern for Partners in Progress in both 2004 and 2005. He has participated in six trips to Haiti.

PIP student intern, Nick Wilson, reflects on the people of Haiti after his fourth trip there in two years.

June 6th came, and my brother, Dr. Gosser, his wife Daneen, Dr. Walter Bechtell, a local dentist, a young couple, Nick Wilson and Nicole Gebadlo and I went off to Haiti.

NOTE: Nick Wilson graduated recently from St. Vincent College, Latrobe, PA where he majored in mathematics and economics. He has made four trips to Haiti including two with student groups and two with PIP executive director, Dr. Rich Gosser. This summer he is working as an intern with Partners in Progress before entering graduate school at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. His career interests are in public policy and international development.

Joining us was Nick Wilson, a young man who recently graduated from St. Vincent College (where I've taught mathematics since 1975). Nick has been to Haiti four times now and because of his encounter with the people of Haiti he has decided to study public policy and international development. His reflections appear below in the Dispatches column.

Third, Dr. Richard Gosser and Nicholas Wilson were able to represent Partners in Progress at the annual international board meeting for the University of Fondwa (UNIF).

PIP executive director, Dr. Rich Gosser, and board member, Nicholas Wilson, were also able to make site visits to several of the development projects that PIP supports.

Gosser and Wilson also observed the advances made on the University of Fondwa poultry project.

Nick Wilson, a May 2004 graduate and recipient of the St. Vincent College (Latrobe, PA) President's award, will intern with Partners in Progress this summer. He is a co-founder of Planet Ayiti a student organization at St. Vincent College that focuses on Haiti. Nick has been to Haiti four times and spent a week working in Fondwa with St. Vincent College students in 2002. He attended the University of Fondwa International meeting at the beginning of June and traveled with PIP executive director, Rich Gosser, to Jacmel and Les Cayes after the meetings.

Wilson, who graduated with majors in both mathematics and economics, will attend Carnegie Mellon University in the Fall as a graduate student in public policy. He plans a career in public policy and international development and intends to spend several years living in the "third world" before returning to graduate school to pursue a PhD degree.

During his internship with PIP, Wilson will develop a press kit and take on tasks related to media outreach and website development.
