Earlier this week, there was an incident off-site involving a student from the Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow (ECOT), said spokesman Nick Wilson, noting the ECOT students were using the library for testing all week.

After the altercation, ECOT hired security for the last few days at the library.

"We understand the library is a gathering place," Wilson said.

ECOT spokesman Nick Wilson said, however, that Richards' complaints are unfounded. He said parents and students should know the limits of each student's probation.

He also said Richards has not called to discuss any of the issues.

"I would say he has the ability to communicate directly with us and we will work with him if he is unsure of anything," Wilson said.

Spokesman Nick Wilson said that there were 26 students registered at the Newark lab and, except for "a couple," each had a computer at home, so they could have been logging into their education at home, too.

For that reason, Richards' suggestion that students weren't at the lab long enough to receive an education was unfounded, Wilson said.

On Thursday, Wilson revised his statement to say "about 20" students didn't have computers at home.

Nick Wilson, an ECOT spokesman, said the 2004-05 audit also confirms that the online school properly enrolled students in non-residential alternative learning centers.

Wilson said the department made "specific inquiries to us about the students and if these were residential or non-residential."He said that because the report doesn't say anything about the learning centers, "We think it clears up the issue" as to their legality.

The online school last month ended its relationship with three alternative learning centers -- in Newark, Columbus and Piqua -- that provided an ECOT education to students who didn't have computers at home.Wilson said the relationships were ended because of confusion regarding the contracts, but ECOT believes the arrangement with the students was legal.

Nick Wilson, spokesman for the Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow, the state's largest charter school with over 6,000 students, said that his school's enrollment is about 70 percent low-income, which makes transportation to test sites a problem.Only 18 percent of ECOT's children showed up for the mandatory tests in 2003-04."We found that number to be very low, and that is why we took steps to involve our whole staff and hired a director of assessment and accountability," he said.

Class sizes typically are equivalent to those in a traditional brick-and-mortar, said ECOT spokesman Nick Wilson.

Students enrolled at the virtual school are required to take core classes, such as English, math, science and social studies.Peripheral courses, such as art, music and physical education, are not required until students are in high school.

ECOT graduates are required to pass the state exit exams in their core classes in order to receive a state diploma, Wilson said.

The rules could hurt some students who need the most help, said Nick Wilson, spokesman for the state's first and largest e-school, Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow.

The state's e-school attendance formula always results in a perfect attendance score, said ECOT spokesman Nick Wilson.

Attendance was one of only three state standards ECOT met last year out of 25, but it is a essentially a "meaningless statistic," Wilson said.

"We use the state's formula because we're required to do so for the report card," Wilson said.

Rather than trying to measure attendance, ECOT internally measures student engagement, including what time of the day children log in, how long they work, how many messages they send the teacher and how often they call the teacher, Wilson said.
