Stamping a "Made in the USA" label on beef at first seemed like a bad idea to rancher Mike Wilson.After all, a cow raised in one place passes through several handlers before reaching consumers, he said, creating too many variables to track.
But the discovery of the nation's first case of mad cow disease has changed his and others' minds.

"I think it is fair for the consumer to know where their product is coming from, whether it's a strawberry or filet mignon," said Wilson, 49, president of the Okanogan County Farm Bureau who lives in Riverside.

Wilson, the rancher, said he's concerned about the cost of implementing the system, but said labeling would be easy for him since he already keeps records and individually identifies his calves.
