"Obviously he was distraught, or upset," Battalion Chief Mike Wilson of the Charlotte Fire Department said.
When the man neighbors know as David tried to get back into his mobile home firefighters had no choice but to stop him.
"This is a very dangerous scene still, you can still see some active fires burning, there's debris, there's sharp objects, he has no protective clothes on," said Wilson.
A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer had to step in and tell the man to relax, but the man turned and grabbed a firefighter. That's when other firefighters had to jump in and wrestle him to the ground.
His young neighbor begged him to calm down, but even with the cuffs on he continued to struggle.
Wilson said they did what they had to do to keep him out of harm's way.
"At that point our job is making sure he doesn't hurt himself," said Wilson.
Investigators have not yet determined a cause for the fire but no charges will be filed against the man for his outburst.
Officers just let him sit for an hour in the back of their patrol car until he calmed down.
