In this piece--published by none other than Gareth Kirkby, producer of Xtra.ca--there is no mention of Egale Canada's Trans Committee and its chair, Mickey Wilson, Prairie Board member, Trans Board member of Egale Canada and resident of Edmonton. Maybe he is too busy compiling a national trans website--I thought Egale didn't have the money for things like this; it certainly hasn't the money to post its 2005 Trans Advocacy Policy.

Rev. Mickey Wilson spoke about his journey as a female-to-male transsexual at the Alberta/Northwest Conference Chapter biannual meeting last fall. Mickey is the pastor of Edmonton's Lambda Christian Community Church and executive director of the Interfaith Centre for AIDS/HIV Resources and Education (ICARE).As well as describing his personal experience, he gave a brief "Transgender 101" lesson, including the most up-to-date definitions for the remarkably diverse groups of people embraced by the transgender identity. Mickey spoke from the heart about being born into a body that was female, yet always sensing inside that "she" was really meant to be a "he."This knowing at an early age that you were different rang true for those of us who were gay or lesbian. No doubt, some of us could also empathize with the inner and outer turmoil of trying to come to terms with such a difference.Yet, for Mickey, all of that would take him beyond the borders of sexuality into the very heart of his creation. The ovation Mickey received at the end of his presentation was a heartfelt expression of joy at his triumph over many odds.He gave a great gift in sharing his story and providing one man's experience in being transsexual in a world that is only just beginning to take transgendered people seriously. Mickey challenged us to open our hearts, our chapter, and our churches to transgendered people. There was acknowledgment all around that even where gays and lesbians were beginning to find acceptance, the issues of gender raised by the reality of transgendered folk remained untouched and seemingly untouchable. We pledged to begin developing a strategy around raising these issues in our regional and local bodies.
