The officer, Jessica Wilson, 26, hadn't even stepped onto the alleged gunman's porch when he turned a shotgun on her, police said.
The blast - from what is believed to have been a 12-gauge pump shotgun loaded with No. 6 shot - struck her just above her bullet-proof vest.
The gunman was identified by neighbors as Hans-George Hofe, 42.
As she fell mortally wounded, Wilson fired back, hitting Hofe in the abdomen.He is reported in serious condition at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.
Although a city firefighter who lived two doors away rushed to Wilson's aid, she died at the scene from a close-range wound to her lower neck, police said.Wilson was taken to William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak where she was pronounced dead at 9:47 p.m., a hospital spokeswoman said.
Wilson is the first Hazel Park officer to die in the line of duty.
Chief Niedermeier said officer Wilson had worked for the department for two years and had been married just two months ago to a Detroit police officer.

In 1994, she had been a 1994 Free Press Scholar-Athlete at Warren Fitzgerald High School, where she was a student council representative and lettered in three sports.She attended Oakland University for three semesters.
Her brother is a Fraser police officer.Wilson had no children.
