ER doctor Jessica Wilson, M.D. says the tongue is one of the riskier areas to get a piercing.
    ...
Dr. Wilson says where people get into trouble is at piercing parties. When the people doing the piercings don't know what they're doing, that's when infection sets in -- and they can be serious.

If infection spreads to the throat, Dr. Wilson says it could make your throat close up and compromise your ability to breathe.

She says "if you notice that you're getting a lot of drainage to the tongue -- if the bleeding won't stop," it's time to seek medical help.

Dr. Wilson warns there's a condition associated with tongue piercings that involves the nerves on the outside of the tongue -- and the pain is excruciating.
