Jennie completed her Registered Nurse training and obtained an honours degree in microbiology at Liverpool University in 1982. She then worked as a Research Associate for the Nursing Practice Research Unit at Surrey University before moving into infection control, initially as Senior Nurse Infection Control at St Georges Hospital, London and then at Charing Cross Hospital and Riverside Health Authority. She is a diplomate member of the Faculty of Public Health and completed her Masters in Public Health at St Georges Hospital Medical School in 2002.

Jennie joined the Health Protection Agency (previously the Public Health Laboratory Service) in 1992 where she developed her interest in surveillance of healthcare associated infection. She was a partner in two major Department of Health funded projects undertaken by the PHLS: Socio-economic Burden of Hospital-acquired infection and the Clinical Audit of Hospital Infection Control Activity. In 1997, Jennie became part of the senior team that developed the National Nosocomial Infection Surveillance Scheme (NINSS) and established national surveillance in England for surgical site infection and hospital-acquired bloodstream infections. She is now the Programme Lead for the Surgical Site Infection Surveillance Service, national representative for England in the European surveillance network - Hospitals in Europe Linked in Infection Control through Surveillance (HELICS), and advises on surveillance of healthcare associated infection and infection control for the HPA.

Jennie has a range of publications in the field of infection control, including two textbooks Infection Control in Clinical Practice (now going into its 3rd edition) and Clinical Microbiology - an Introduction for the Healthcare Professional. She has also worked as expert advisor to the infection prevention and control programme for the Clinical Governance Support Team.

Jennie joined the Richard Wells Research Centre as a Research Fellow in 2005. In addition to her general knowledge and expertise in the field of infection prevention and control, she is particularly interested in developing research related to the surveillance of healthcare-associated infection and its value in reducing rates of infection.
