To his credit, Charter St. Louis SVP Barry Wilson solved my problems.More important, he used the experience to better the process for the next HD customer.

Wilson says this is typical."Literally we review the process on the fly, and if we find something that's not working, we fix it or we tweak it," he says.

When we talked by phone after the install, he already was aware of my issues and walked through them with me, listing steps that would be or already had been taken to prevent problems.

I could almost hear the wheels whir as he responded to other issues that we discovered during our chat, like the interactive channels that don't work with Motorola HD set-tops and mystifying on-screen messages.

A few minutes in to my talk with Wilson it became clear that many of my questions would have been answered by the welcome kit, which I now have. The small blue folder with a cover proclaiming "attention channel surfers: your monster video has arrived" opens to a guide to Charter services and includes inserts customized by market.

Contractors do the bulk of Charter's HD installs in this market.

"We send our contract installers through the same training that our in-house techs receive, which includes a fairly elaborate customer-experience, customer-care piece," Wilson says.
    ...
Wilson insists that my contractor installer's fate had nothing to do with my specific install gone awry.
    ...
I haven't tested the different cables yet, but Wilson says Charter has encouraged use of the S-Video connection as a simpler process less prone to error.Video quality has been the chief post-install customer concern.
    ...
Wilson is adding On Demand to an automated checklist.
    ...
That's the honeymoon period," Wilson says, adding that such accounts are monitored closely.
