Jane Wilson-Howarth trained first in zoology (BSc from Plymouth) and then medicine (BM Southampton), and through her work overseas has maintained a strong interest in parasitology and vector ecology and control.
She worked in Asia for 11 years on various health and hygiene education and child-survival programmes for numerous agencies, including in Lombok for the Australian government, in Pakistan for the European Union and World Bank, in Nepal, Bangladesh and India with WaterAid, and in Nepal for USAID.
In each location she has acted as GP to her expatriate neighbours and has been involved in various free clinics as a volunteer including in Ladakh, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

Dr Wilson-Howarth is a fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, has published a range of papers in academic medical journals, and lectures widely, including at the Royal Geographical Society, for the Register of Engineers for Disaster Relief, the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and at the University of Cambridge.
She has written a regular medical feature for Wanderlust magazine since it was first published in 1993 and writes occasionally for the Independent newspaper, Condé Nast Traveller and BBC Wildlife magazines.
She now also works as a General Practitioner in England.
