AFTER 11 years, 2LF radio station personality Greg Willmette is hanging up the headphones and is heading home to the Central Coast.

Greg originally started working in Young at 2LF as an announcer in 1996, leaving the station in May 2004 to work in advertising sales for two years at the Young Witness.

Greg then moved back over to 2LF to work in advertising sales, before returning to host the breakfast program, also working as a compare at the Young Services Club and participating in many community charity events.

Greg said it was never his intention to stay here as long as he has, but it's been the kind nature of the local community that has made him feel so comfortable in Young.

"I remember the first day I came here, it was August 11 1996, it was cold and wet and walking down the main street I didn't know anybody, but that changed very quickly. Now I'll walk around and everybody stops to say hello," Greg said.

In looking back on his time in Young, Greg said there are many memories he will be taking with him when he moves back to his hometown on the central coast to work at the Hornsby Leagues Club.

"In radio, there's always something new everyday," Greg said."But one day I'll never forget is the day I literally lost my voice on air.I had to call Cabbage in to talk while I was dabbling with the buttons and pointing around madly, trying to tell him what he had to do.

"And the most striking day on air was probably September 11 2002, having to break the news to people about the terrorist attacks as they woke was certainly hard."

Other memorable moments Greg included were when the Sydney Olympic torch relay visited Young, calling the local rugby league matches on the radio for six years, driving a trotter in Temora, playing in various sports and his participation in various charity events not only in Young but in Boorowa, Grenfell, Harden, Cowra and Cootamundra.

These included the Walk for Life to Wagga Wagga, a tandem parachute jump at Young Airport in 1999, and organising the Young Witness/2LF charity cricket events and a demolition derby to raise money for various local charities.

Greg was awarded citizen of the year in 2001 and also received an award from Young Shire Council in 2004 for his dedicated service to the community.

Greg's last shift will be on Friday July 6 before he starts in his new position on July 8.
