Banks try to tap into new market | The Janesville... - [Cached Version]

"These people are definitely a growing piece of the population," said Mary Willmer-Sheedy, senior vice president of retail banking at M&I Bank in Janesville.

"Over time, the qualifications needed to open an account have become more defined, and people who have had bumps in the road with their credit or who haven't established credit have had a much more difficult time."

Survey after survey looked at the characteristics of the "unbanked."
    ...
"In the banking business, customers are pretty loyal," Willmer-Sheedy said.

But the motives run deeper than the immediate bottom line, she said.

"Banks are always looking for ways to help the community, and this is a way to help build responsible consumers," she said.

Those efforts have been at the forefront for years.M&I and other banks have a long history with the Personal Economics Program sponsored by the Wisconsin Bankers Association. The PEP program is designed to help people of all ages become better managers of their money.

Willmer-Sheedy said that what M&I is doing now with its first-time customers is really an extension of the groundwork laid by its work in community education.

"We've been very active in educating everyone from small children to adults," she said."The amount of time kids spend in class on financial literacy is really small.

"Education for people of all ages is critically important."

The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and others have come to the conclusion that financial literacy is at the core of every discussion about the "unbanked."They know that any institution that wants to pick up these new customers must build a strong dose of financial education into its marketing plan.
