    ACQUISITION DISCUSSIONS WITH

    ...
Nashville, TN.- The Nashville School of Law (NSL) has named William R. Willis, Senior Partner of the Willis & Knight law firm, Nashville, to lead discussions regarding the proposed acquisition of the law school by The Tennessee Board of Regents.

Joe C. Loser, Jr., Dean of NSL, said its Board of Trust unanimously approved the appointment of Willis at a recent board meeting.
    ...
"Bill Willis is an outstanding attorney. Most importantly, he and his firm have in-depth experience in addressing the issues we are discussing with the Board of Regents. We believe his appointment assures all parties involved of a thorough examination of all points of view within a reasonable time frame."

    ...
Willis, a graduate of Vanderbilt Law School is a former president of the Nashville Bar Association and the former chairman of the State of Tennessee Certification Commission during the administrations of Governors Alexander and McWherter. He served in the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association during its deliberations regarding the accreditation of law schools in the United States. He is s member of the American College of Trial Lawyers.

Willis represented Nashville Memorial Hospital during its acquisition by Health Trust, Inc., which required approval by the Attorney General of Tennessee. Proceeds from that transaction established the non-profit Memorial Foundation. Should the Board of Regents acquire the Nashville School of Law, a similar non-profit foundation would likely be formed.

In previous correspondence with the Board of Regents, the NSL Board of Trust identified a minimum of ten points for discussion related to the proposed acquisition. These include the availability of adequate funding by the State of Tennessee and the continuation of the mission of the school, which is to provide affordable night classes in legal education for working men and women.

"The argument sounds perfectly logical to me," said Bill Willis, a local attorney and past president of the Nashville Bar Association. "I have long opposed term limits for elected public officials, not necessarily on the basis of the constitution but on the basis that it deprives people of experienced office holders for whose education they have paid.

"It seems to me that the constitutional requirements are the constitutional requirements and if term limits are not included in those requirements then they are unconstitutional," he added.
