    Willis, the golf coach at Frederica Academy, hit a 7-iron onto the green at 12, then putted in for eagle, moving him to 3-under.Back-to-back birdie putts on 13 and 14 sent him to 5-under and gave him the lead, but Willis admitted nerves took over down the stretch.He bogeyed 17 and 18.

    "I hit it great until the last two holes," he said."I tightened up a little."

    There were plenty of others in the hunt on the first day.

    Brunswick's Chris Johnson, sparked by an eagle on 12, made a back-nine charge to the front.The eagle on 12 and subsequent birdies on 13 and 14 sent him to 4-under and a tie for the lead, but bogeys on 16 and 18 ended his day with a 70.

    Smith made five birdies in his round, but remarkably only one of those came on one of the four par-5 holes at Retreat, all of which Smith is capable of reaching in two shots, according to Frederica head coach Tom Willis.
