"The kids planned it," Principal Martha Willis said."(Bataan Day) keeps evolving, and it's different every year."

Bataan Elementary School was named in 1957 as a tribute to the 192nd Tank Battalion.Willis recited portions of the building dedication speech to the crowd.

"Many men go through life without a murmur. But occasionally, a few men are called upon to perform certain deeds that ultimately unfold into the pages of history," she said.

Friday's ceremony also included a moment of silence for the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.Second-grader Katrina Lindsley read her essay contest-winning poem on the disaster, titled "The Day the World Trade Center Went Away."

"New York was wild that horrible day; when the World Trade Center went away. The people in New York were very sad; that Osama Bin Laden; asked some people to knock it down," Lindsley said.

Marty Willis, principal at Bataan Elementary School, Port Clinton, said the Bataan Parent's Club has been successful for many years even though its meetings are not highly attended.

The highly-organized group, which consists of a treasurer and fund-raiser, communications and special events chairmen has at least 40 parent volunteers who serve the needs of the school.

Willis said volunteers are actively recruited at the beginning of each school year by mailing letters and volunteer applications to parents requesting their participation.

In addition to correspondence, volunteers are also recruited during school events.

Willis said once the club board comes up with ideas and needs, a volunteer coordinator organizes the volunteers to execute the plans, whether the school needs money for playground equipment or volunteers to chaperone a school assembly.

She said each year the club provides funding for the sixth-graders' trip to Stone Laboratory on Gibraltar Island, which costs $2,000 to $3,000.She said the volunteers also coordinate Santa's Workshop, where students can buy Christmas gifts at school. Each year, proceeds from the event go to a charitable cause such as the Make-a-Wish Foundation or a needy student.

"The way it's going now, it works pretty well, so we're lucky," Willis said.
