Willis said she would disagree with such a proposal, on the grounds that there are some county services that should be provided without a fee because of the need.

Martha Willis, 81, president of the League of Women Voters of Porter County, said one reasons why the league tackles so many issues now is because many women today work full-time and don't have time to study political issues.

The league researches issues from abortion to school board candidates so women will know why they're voting, Willis said.

Willis said this is exactly what the league is trying to prevent.Willis researches topics to educate women and make them more confident when they vote.She said voting without understanding the repercussions is "very dangerous."

Still, the league has reached some women who won't waste their right to vote.

Getina Powell, 21, of Gary, said she votes in every election.

Martha Willis, president of the Porter County League of Women Voters, said representatives of her group also will attend the public hearing to deliver a message consistent with the national and state leagues, long proponents of a woman's right to choose.

"Porter Memorial is a full-service hospital that treats those who have been referred by their doctors," Willis said."It's very interesting that those who want the hospital to change the policy can't empathize with those who have serious problems."

Martha Willis, president of the Porter County League of Women Voters, said she had been encouraging league members to participate in the process, not as league members, but as active citizens and intelligent people who know how a study committee works.
