The fire in the home's attached garage caused damage to portions of the split-level residence, Mark Willis, Newton Fire/EMS deputy chief, said.
A Newton police officer who was on duty at the time of the fire call lives at the home with his family.

"You can imagine what it would be like if you got called to your own home," Willis said.
Montano's wife and three children were at home at the time of the fire and were able to escape without injury, Willis said.
Fire crews arrived on the scene of the fire within four minutes and had the fire extinguished within several minutes after arriving, Willis said.
Although there was extensive damage to the home, Willis said the family should be able to reinhabit the home after some repairs and clean-up.
