,,Mark Willis, WBC chief operating officer, said there have been companies expressing interest over the past year and this may be the way to get them to commit.
,,"We have interest throughout the state from companies considering locating data centers here," Willis said."Broadband and power will drive that."
,,Data centers, which provide managed server hosting and data storage services, require enormous amounts of power.
,,Willis says the state is poised to take advantage of the interest.
,,"We've taken some Business Ready Communities Grant money and dedicated it to data centers since we're starting to see the interest there," Willis said."We're trying to kind of custom make a BRC data center grant program. It will mainly be dedicated to lowering energy costs and broadband costs for the first three years to help them get their cash flow going."
,, Wyoming is well positioned with technology.
,,"The state is about as well wired as any in the western U.S. except California," Willis said.
,,That broadband capability is increasingly important as businesses of all types rely more and more on the Internet to do business.
,,"We're looking at closing some data center deals in the next year or so," Willis said."The cost per square foot is astronomical so, naturally, they're very cautious."
,,Willis said that enterprise-level data centers that offer services to a variety of companies are the most likely to locate here.
,,"It's hard for us to go out there and get the huge 100,000-square-foot data centers that Google, Prologic and those type of companies do," Willis said.
