Respondents found a gasoline powered generator in use inside the house, and suspect the couple started it after their electricity went out, said Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Willis.

Hazardous materials experts have been called to the home to measure levels of the carbon monoxide, Willis said.

Chief Jeff Willis, of the Big Bear Fire Department, said the proposed development is accessible in the event of a fire and is on relatively flat ground, where fires typically move more slowly than on hillsides.The developer has worked to address fire concerns, he said.

The Web site advertising Sky Valley Estates touts spacious log cabin-style houses selling for nearly $1 million in a development that "has a gated community feel."

"I'm confident when the project is done it will be a smart project," Willis said.

Because there is currently no water flowing through storm drains, the diesel should pool, where it can be safely flushed from the drains and have minimal environmental impact, said Corpus Christi Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeff Willis.

"I don't think this will have any real impact because it's not raining," Willis said.

Corpus Christi firefighters responded about 2 a.m. to a car fire at 1118 Green Willow Drive that spread through a garage and damaged three vehicles, said Battalion Chief Jeff Willis.

By the time firefighters arrived flames had swept from the attached garage and blistered siding at a neighbor's home, and caused electrical damage at that residence, Willis said.

Nine residents were affected, said Battalion Chief Jeff Willis.

"They were without electricity until AEP Texas got the power back on," Willis said.

His wife was outside at 3129 Southern Sun Drive as the first of six engine companies arrived, said Battalion Chief Jeff Willis.Her husband had gone back in to try to put the fire out, according to the report.

"We found him laying in the hallway outside a burning bedroom," Willis said.
