Jean Willis, court administrator for the Fifth District, said Wednesday she and others requested the new judges.
The generally accepted case load for a judge is about 900 cases per year, she explained, while the judges in Chaves and Eddy counties have been handling an average of 1,700 cases per year.
"The need is very great," she said.

According to Willis, the Fifth District came in as the top priority for new judges according to a case load study completed by the National Center for State Courts.
She said the new judges have been needed for years but facilities weren't available to house them.The newly expanded and renovated Chaves County Courthouse has created needed room for an additional judge, she added.
