David Willis, president of Turf Tech, said Dyess made the right choice for its field.

"We've had this stuff about a year, but no one wanted to step up and be the first," Willis said in a telephone conversation from Escondido, Calif., where his office is located."It's just great that they (Dyess) stepped up and took a chance with it."

Willis said Turf Tech has been in business for 13 years, and began making synthetic fields about four years ago.

David Willis, president and founder of Turf Technologies Inc., said residential customers make up the majority of his client base, but when he started the business in 2002, it primarily served commercial and civic customers.

Originally putting in synthetic fields for universities, tot lots for schools, and greens for city facilities, the company still caters to these customers but lays about 70 percent more turf at clients' homes.

"There is enough turf on the ground, there is enough validity in the market place, that sales have become very easy," Willis said."It's a great product. It's great for dogs, it's great for kids, you don't have to water it on the weekends."

His most popular turf is TurfTech Super, a synthetic grass made of polyethylene monofilament fibers. The TurfTech Super is a bit more expensive than the company's other products, at $7.85 per square foot with installation.

"I don't think it's better than a perfect grass lawn, (but) the reality of the situation is you don't have to water it, you don't have to fertilize it and it's certainly more durable," Willis said.

"It gives so that your ankles and knees won't give," Willis said.

The company, which opened July 2002, primarily manufactures, sells and installs its product in California, but also distributes to Colorado, Nevada, and the United Kingdom.

Currently the business has earned $2.6 million in gross sales, but has not yet broken even.Willis said this should soon change ---- he projects sales to increase to $5 million in 2004.

Before opening in July 2002, Willis owned Empire Associates Inc., a general contractor specializing in sport facilities.During several projects, Willis noticed contractors were installing more and more synthetic fields and soon realized the potential of synthetics.

Rather than adding a new division to his business, Willis wanted to focus solely on designing, selling and installing his own brand of turf.So Willis closed Empire Associates and opened Turf Technologies in its stead.

"We no longer wanted to be general contractors ---- we wanted to do the business ourselves," Willis said.
