Speaking this June at the Offshore Newfoundland conference in St John's, Hibernia president David Willis pointed out that the last two years have brought an unusually small number of bergs.
In contrast, this year has been a very active one for ice, he said. 'Some 15-20 bergs have been redirected this year at Hibernia, and none of them have reached the platform or caused any real concern.' Most have been lassoed and towed.
At Terra Nova, the platform will of course be able to avoid any confrontations with large bergs, though the riser array remains behind. How all this works out over the coming years will have a major influence on the shape of developments yet to come in eastern Canada's unique offshore play.OE
