Dave Willis named "Entrepreneur of the Year"7 July 2000, Frazer, PA. Dave Willis, founder and president of Whitford Worldwide, received high honors at a special dinner held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia on Friday, 23 June.The banquet celebrated the 2000 Greater Philadelphia Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.

The competition was formidable.There were 43 nominees from 33 companies located throughout the Greater Philadelphia region.Willis, and Whitford Worldwide, the company he founded, won the award in the category of Manufacturing.Whitford makes high-performance fluoropolymer coatings, known best for their use as nonstick coatings on cookware.

Ernst & Young, the primary sponsor of the awards, stated: "We are proud to recognize an elite group of entrepreneurs who, through their leadership, vision, and passion, have proven they have what it takes to persevere and succeed in our increasingly competitive and ever-changing business environment...dedication, a willingness to sacrifice, a desire to achieve".

Willis, who was fired from the first two jobs he held after graduating from the Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania, decided the only job security he could find would be to start his own company - which he did in 1969.Since then, under his leadership, Whitford has grown from one office in West Chester, Pennsylvania, to a worldwide organization with manufacturing facilities in six countries, direct offices in 5 more, agents in an additional 25 and sales in more than 50 countries.

Willis, on receiving the award, thanked the sponsors and said, "Anyone who wins an award of this type has a distinct advantage over his competitors.He or she is backed up by better people.That's certainly true in the case of Whitford.So I accept this honor in the name of the 249 outstanding individuals in many countries of the world who have made it possible for me to be here tonight.Thank you one and all."
