Alan Willis is an independent consultant in organizational performance measurement and reporting to meet the information needs of investors and other stakeholders, while addressing the related governance responsibilities of management and boards of directors for transparency and accountability.
He chaired the advisory panel for the 2003 research study by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) on the business value created by stakeholder relationships; he collaborated with Stratos Inc. in their 2001 and 2003 surveys of corporate sustainability reporting in Canada; for Canada's National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy he co-authored their 1999 report on the feasibility of a core set of eco-efficiency indicators for business; he authored a background paper for the National Round Table's recently launched Capital Markets Program.He was head of Canada's delegation to ISO TC207's Sub-committee 4 on Environmental Performance Evaluation in the late 90's.For the last three years, he has been a member of the volunteer judging panel for the environmental/ sustainability category of the CICA's Corporate Reporting Awards contest.He represents the CICA in various domestic and international initiatives to develop accounting, reporting and verification guidance regarding Greenhouse Gas Emissions.
For CICA's Canadian Performance Reporting Board, he led the research and development for the CICA's 2001 publication "Environmental Performance - Measuring and Managing What Matters", on the relationship between environmental performance and shareholder value creation.He has participated in five environment-related research studies by the CICA over the last decade.He currently directs the program to publish and maintain the CICA's voluntary guidance on disclosures in Management's Discussion and Analysis, issued by the CICA in November, 2002 (now being updated in light of recent regulators' requirements regarding CEO/CFO certification, disclosure controls and procedures and continuous disclosure obligations).
Alan has been a regular speaker on all these topics and has written about them in various Canadian and international business and professional journals.He is a Chartered Accountant, living near Toronto.
