Willis-Starbuck was a Berkeley High graduate who had attended Dartmouth for the past two years on scholarship and had returned to Berkeley this summer for an internship helping homeless women and children.She was out for the night with friends at 1:45 a.m. Sunday when she was shot outside her College Avenue apartment, police and witnesses have said.

The shooting happened after Willis-Starbuck argued with a group of young men who had approached her and her friends and tried to flirt with them.According to one of the friends, Danielle Youngblood, the men called the women "bitches" when rebuffed, which upset Willis-Starbuck, who explained to the men why the word was hurtful.

"They told me (Willis-Starbuck) called him and they wanted to know why," Mikael said.

Willis-Starbuck's mother, Kimberly Willis-Starbuck, of Georgia, did not return a phone call late Wednesday.She is in Berkeley for memorial services.

Berkeley police had said previously only that they were investigating whether the argument between the group of men and Willis-Starbuck and her friends was related to the subsequent shooting.
